The Manatee County School Board’s Health Insurance Proposals Will Hurt the Lowest Paid Employees and Cause Damage to the Plan

BRADENTON —The Manatee Education Association (MEA), the union representing teachers and paraprofessionals, rejected a single recommendation made by the assigned Special Magistrate in the negotiations impasse with the School District. Although the union is not opposed to increasing health insurance premiums for the current year, the district’s proposal has some fundamental flaws according to Bruce Proud, the union’s chief negotiator.

Manatee County School Board’s Proposals Decrease Earnings and Benefits for Teachers and Paraprofessionals

Important Information Regarding Race to the Top

There has been a lot of information being circulated about a competitive grant called Race to the Top (RT3). States are being given the opportunity to apply for grant money that will flow through the state to local school districts. In order to get any of the money local districts must sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) binding them to do certain things. Many of the items required by the grant are wages, hours and working conditions which are mandatory subjects of bargaining. MEA and local unions around the state are being asked to participate in signing the MOU which binds them to participate in the bargaining of the changes prescribed in the MOU.

Attention: Teachers and Paraprofessionals

The first pay day for the 2009-2010 school year will be August 31, 2009 and then the 10^th and 25^th of the month from that point forward. In the future the first pay day will be after ten days of work. This issue was resolved by ratification of the teacher and paraprofessional contracts.
